How to get inspired

I've never believed that you should wait for inspiration to come to you. Then you can easily wait forever. I believe in making myself inspired. That being said, it is not always easy for me to do that and it isn’t something that just comes to me every day for free.

So I want to share with you some of the tips that I have collected throughout the years and that has helped me:

  • Be brave. There is nothing that kills creativity more than being afraid of what people might think about the things that you do. Worrying that it will be laughed at, gossiped about or mocked. Do your best to get rid of those kind of thoughts and focus on what you want to achieve.

  • Base your work on your own taste instead of creating something that you guess others will like. If you are genuine in what you do and enjoy it yourself, then there are probably other people out there who are like you and thinks the same. At the same time, you are true to yourself and will certainly have a lot more fun in the process.

  • Watch movies and TV-shows and memorize what makes you react and feel. Those feelings and situations can often be used later for your own creations.

  • Look at pictures and let your interpretations of them be the fuel for inspiration.

  • Read quotes and interviews with people you admire and use it as a starting point.

  • Once you have started a creation of any kind; an article, a campaign idea, an invention, etc., try to not get too caught up in your own head by trying to make it absolute perfect right away. Just go with the flow. There is time to adjust and improve later.

  • Give yourself routines and set aside time for working on your project. As I said, don't wait for the inspiration to come to you.

  • Make sure everything around you is as good as it can be. Take care of yourself. Eat well, exercise and make sure to sleep the hours that you need. Have a clean and tidy workplace. The fewer things that can disturb you the better you feel and the easier it will be to focus.

  • Allow yourself to be proud of yourself. Every single thing you accomplish is better than nothing. Most people have one or more ideas in their head about things they would like to do or create. Many of them just let it stay as ideas. You have taken your idea into action, and that alone is huge and important. Each step counts.

  • Talk about your project with people you know will support you, push you forward and give you positive energy. Avoid the opposite ones.

  • Do something completely new that you have never tested before. Find an activity that gets your adrenaline pumping or take a course and get to know people who are different to you and those you usually spend time with, and by doing so gain new perspectives.

  • Make your goal clear, write it down and put it in a place where you often see it. Focus on where you are going.

  • Take a walk.
